Amazon.com Inc (AMZN.O) announced on Tuesday that it is extending its healthcare offerings by offering US Prime members a $5 monthly subscription plan that includes a choice of generic drugs as well as doorstep delivery.

According to Vin Gupta, Amazon Pharmacy’s chief medical officer, the RxPass programme includes over 50 medications that address more than 80 chronic conditions, such as high blood pressure, anxiety, diabetes, and male pattern baldness.

Customers who are enrolled in Medicare, Medicaid, or any other government health programme are not eligible to use Amazon Pharmacy’s RxPass service.

According to an interview with John Love, vice president of Amazon Pharmacy, RxPass would save the typical Prime member $100 per year. Amazon Prime subscribers in the majority of US states will be able to join the programme beginning on Tuesday.

Without insurance, in addition to the Prime membership fee of $139 per year in the United States, a flat $5 fee would apply.

Amazon’s continual attempts to extend its healthcare portfolio, which has lately included telemedicine, prescription delivery, fitness monitors, and cancer research, are reflected in the new offering. See More

Amazon purchased online pharmacy PillPack in 2018, allowing the retail juggernaut to offer a pricing comparison and prescription fulfilment platform. Now, its Drugstore programme poses a challenge to two pharmacy stores, CVS Health Corp (CVS.N) and Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc. (WBA.O).
