PML-Q President Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain urged Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday to choose the next army chief based only on the Constitution.
The PML-Q leader and the premier met to discuss the current political climate and the financial crisis, among other key issues of national importance.
When asked about his health, Shujaat smiled and said, “You bring down the inflation, my health will improve quickly,” according to those familiar with the details.
The finance minister, Ishaq Dar, has managed the dollar rate, and the premier has informed him that the focus now is on inflation.
Shujaat added that, while they support the administration, the people should be provided with some type of assistance. “Bring down the prices of oil and other food things,” he urged to the prime minister.
While selecting General Qamar Javed Bajwa’s replacement, the PML-Q leader reportedly advised the premier to follow the regulations and not listen to anyone, stating that “this is a sensitive matter and a national obligation.”
The prime minister assured that everything will go just as planned.
Army Commander Gen. Bajwa will retire next month after serving for a long time, igniting a heated debate in political circles. The PTI leader has requested that the current administration defer the appointment of the army commander to the next administration.
The ruling coalition has stated unequivocally that it is the prime minister‘s prerogative and that he will make the decision when the time comes, advising the opposition not to politicise this sensitive topic.
