KABUL: Islamabad has condemned the attack on Pakistan’s embassy in Kabul as a “assassination attempt,” while the Daesh organization has claimed credit for it.
A security guard was injured in Friday’s assault in the Afghan capital.
In a statement cited by jihadist website SITE, the regional branch of Daesh claimed to have “attacked the apostate Pakistani envoy and his guards.”
According to Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the mission’s leader was the target of a “assassination attempt.” Sharif has requested an investigation.
A police spokesman in Kabul said that one suspect had been apprehended and two small guns had been seized when security forces searched a nearby building.
Although Pakistan does not publicly recognize the Taliban administration in Afghanistan, it has maintained a complete diplomatic mission and an embassy in Kabul since the hard-line party took power in August of last year.
According to an embassy official, the ambassador and other staff members were safe, but a lone shooter “came behind the shelter of homes and started firing.”
According to a representative for Afghanistan’s foreign ministry, the “failed strike” was strongly condemned.
In a statement, it threatened to find and punish the perpetrators, stating, “The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan will not allow any malicious actors to pose a threat to the security of diplomatic missions in Kabul.”
Pakistan’s connections with the Taliban are complicated, with Islamabad long accused of assisting the terrorist organization but simultaneously supporting the US-led invasion of Afghanistan that overthrew them in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks.
More than a million Afghan refugees live in Pakistan, and clashes are common along their porous shared border.
Since reclaiming authority, the Afghan Taliban has pledged to keep foreign terrorist organizations out of the country.
