On Monday, Iran faced more international censure following the murder of a woman in police custody, which sparked huge protests. Tehran accused Washington of orchestrating the unrest in order to destabilize the country.
Iran has cracked down on the greatest rallies it has seen since 2019, which were sparked by the September 16 death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Kurdish woman, after she was caught by morality police enforcing the Islamic Republic’s rigorous clothing regulations for women. The case has received much criticism.
However, the sanctions have not deterred Iranians from calling for the toppling of the whole Islamic system, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Women have been actively engaging in the protests, waving and lighting their veils on fire.
The human rights organization Hengaw released a video purporting to show people celebrating as women removed their headscarves in Sanandaj, the Kurdistan province’s capital, to protest compulsory hijab. Later footage showed what seemed to be tear gas flooding the streets, as well as loud gunfire.
Another social media video purported to show police firing on protesters late on Monday in Sardasht, a town with a sizable Kurdish population. The video could not be verified by Reuters.

The anti government protests are the largest to rock Iran since riots over fuel prices in 2019, when 1,500 people were allegedly killed in a crackdown on protesters. This was the worst era of domestic turmoil in the Islamic Republic’s history.

Iran’s president, Ebrahim Raisi, has stated that the government maintains the right to free expression and has ordered an investigation into Amini’s death.
A prominent Iranian teachers’ organization asked both teachers and students to join in the first statewide strike since the unrest began on Monday and Wednesday, according to a statement posted on social media on Sunday.
