Israeli And Turkish Leaders Will Meet Again After Long Time

Aur Sunao - Turkish And Israeli Leaders
  • Relations between Turkey and Israel have lately strengthened.
  • President Erdogan and Prime Minister Lapid met outside the UNGA.
  • Members of Hamas have been residing in Turkey, a NATO member.

According to Lapid’s office, the meeting between the leaders of US-allied nations, Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid and Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, took place on the outside of the UN General Assembly on Tuesday.

Relations between Israel and Turkey have lately warmed due to divisions over the Palestinian issue, with energy emerging as a major area of cooperation. It is expected that they will soon exchange new ambassadors.

Along with discussing energy, Lapid praised Erdogan for sharing intelligence with both countries and mentioned Israel’s wish for the release of four of its citizens, including two soldiers, who have been missing in the Gaza Strip since a 2014 war, according to Lapid’s office.

Members of Hamas, which rules Gaza and is widely recognised as a terrorist organisation in the West, have been residing in Turkey, a NATO member. That link has repeatedly proven to be a hurdle in attempts to improve relations with Israel.

Ankara was shocked by the deaths of ten Turkish activists in brawls in 2010 when Israeli marines captured a ship seeking to escape Israel’s naval blockade of Gaza.
