The foundation stone for the M6 Sukkur-Hyderabad motorway was laid on Tuesday, and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif vowed not to cut shortcuts on the project’s quality.

Prior to the prime minister’s address, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah expressed remorse that the previous leader, Nawaz Sharif, had pledged that the federal government would build the Sukkur-Rohri bridge and had asked him for funds for the project.
PM Shehbaz then informed the CM that his brother had earlier declared the project to be completed and was now declaring its completion.

Prior to the prime minister’s speech, former planning minister Asad Umar congratulated Sindh people on the start of construction on the Hyderabad-Sukkur Motorway, but criticized the project’s eight-month delay.
According to Umar, the project was approved by the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council during the government of former Prime Minister Imran Khan in 2021. (ECNEC). He also stated that the Public-Private Partnership Board has approved the project for completion on March 31, 2022.

Construction Deal Signed
The National Motorway Authority (NHA) and the contractor signed a concession agreement in December 2021 for the construction of the Sukkur-Hyderabad highway project.
According to the permitted transaction structure of the Public Private Partnership Board, the federal government will invest only Rs9.5 billion during the construction phase, with the private party covering the remaining Rs297.5 billion in project expenditures through equity and commercial debt.
During the concession term, the private party would additionally pay Rs908 billion in corporate taxes and a minimum of Rs408 billion to NHA. The project will also be given to the NHA for free at the end of the concession period.
The M6 Motorway is a popular term for the nation’s largest PPP project ever signed.
The federal Public Private Partnership Authority (P3A) worked with the National Housing Authority (NHA) to structure the project using the Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) method.
The 306-kilometer-long route will have six lanes. The private party shall build and operate the project for a period of 25 years beginning on the date of the Agreement’s execution and planned to be a climate-resilient project.
The project would close a gap in the north-south Peshawar-Karachi highway network. The project is expected to have a favorable economic impact by drastically lowering travel time and expenses and boosting the area’s socioeconomic standing.
