The global pop icon Shakira recently said, “I’m confident that I have enough evidence to support my case, and that justice will win in my favour.”

Although Shakira may be going through her “darkest hours,” she is fighting her way out of them.

Ahead of the release of her first album of brand-new music in five years, the singer speaks about the tax fraud case brought by the Spanish government, which carries a potential eight-year prison sentence for her.

The tax fraud case had to go to trial after Shakira rejected a settlement offer, the details of which had not been made public. When she claims she wasn’t residing in Spain between 2012 and 2014, she was previously charged with failing to pay $15 million in taxes.

According to court records obtained by Reuters, Shakira lived there throughout that time since in 2012 she possessed a residence in Barcelona.

The Bahamas was listed as her official address. She will be sentenced to prison time and pay a $24 million fine if she is found guilty.

Defending her position as a “matter of principle,” the singer labelled the Spanish government’s claims “false charges.”

Shakira claims she was “busy pursuing my professional commitments around the world” and did not spend the 183 days in the country that were necessary for tax purposes.

She said, “Even before they filed a case, I paid what they thought I owed.” I don’t owe them anything as of today.

Last but not least, I knew I was treating the situation honestly and transparently from the outset since PricewaterhouseCoopers, one of the four major tax consulting organisations in the world, counselled me.

According to Shakira, this is typical operating practise for the Spanish tax authorities and their strategies against not only her and other famous people but also the “average taxpayer.”

However, she added, “even in the absence of evidence to support these untrue assertions, as they routinely do, they have turned to a theatrical marketing effort to try to persuade people and apply media pressure combined with the possibility of reputational damage to secure payment agreements.

It is well known that the Spanish tax authorities routinely treat ordinary taxpayers the same way as celebrities like me, Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar, Xabi Alonso, and many others.
