The geopolitical tensions among the G20’s top nations had been the focus of Indonesian President Joko Widodo’s efforts to mediate. Unease about the invasion, which Russia refers to as a “special operation,” prompted walkouts and boycott threats at meetings this year.

(The president) has endeavored to ensure that everyone cools off, and that appears to be happening now, Coordinating Minister of Maritime and Investment Affairs Luhut Pandjaitan told local reporters in Bali.

In a recent interview with the Financial Times, the president, often known as Jokowi, declared that Russia was welcome to attend the summit, which he expected to be overshadowed by a “very frightening” escalation in global tensions.

The G20 is not designed to be a political platform. Its intended focus is on economy and development, he was quoted as saying.

Indonesia has also sent an invitation to Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, who has declared that if Putin attends, he will not attend and is expected to participate virtually.

Other world leaders, including US Vice President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping, are expected to attend the November 15 gathering.
