T20I WC 2022: Journey To The T20I World Cup Semi-Finals

ADELAIDE: The T20I World Cup semi-finals will be played in Sydney on Wednesday between New Zealand and Pakistan, and in Adelaide on Thursday between India and England.

AFP Sport looks at the groups and how they got to the final four teams:

New Zealand

The Black Caps set the tone for their campaign thus far with an 89-run thrashing of the tournament’s defending champions and hosts Australia.

The flood in Afghanistan had little effect on their progress. Glenn Phillips’ 64-ball 104, the World Cup’s second century, helped them defeat Sri Lanka.

New Zealand struggled to equal England’s 180 score, but rebounded to upset the underdogs Ireland thanks to a quickfire 61 from captain Kane Williamson.

To show how dangerous they are, last year’s lost finalists stunned pre-tournament favorites Australia and England in the tougher of the two Super 12 groups.

The season of the 2009 winners began tragically as they lost a last-ball thriller against India and then a heartbreaking loss to Zimbabwe.

Their victory over the Netherlands was unremarkable, as they appeared doomed, losing four wickets in their 92-run chase.

Pakistan, on the other hand, delivered a commanding performance to smash South Africa and rekindle their hopes of reaching the semi-finals, and the Dutch aided them by surprising South Africa.

Babar Azam’s team overcame Bangladesh in a game that may have set their fate and went to the final four, with pace spearhead Shaheen Shah Afridi scoring career-best figures of 4-22.

Azam’s performance, on the other hand, is still troubling, as the opener has only scored 39 runs in five games.

After hammering their opponents for 112 in Perth, England’s Jos Buttler team thrashed Afghanistan to preserve their position as tournament favorites.

However, a five-run DLS loss to Ireland and a washout against Australia put them in a difficult position.

The Three Lions came from behind to overcome the Kiwis, while star all-rounder Ben Stokes’ unbeaten 42 helped England beat Sri Lanka by four wickets in a nail-biting match to get to the semifinals.

Fast bowlers Sam Curran, Chris Woakes, and Mark Wood all played important roles in Australia’s victory over New Zealand. Both Buttler and Alex Hales made half-centuries.

In front of over 90,000 spectators, India India ignited the battle with Virat Kohli’s brilliance as he defeated Pakistan’s 159 on the penultimate ball.

India lost only once, to South Africa, on their way to the semifinals as table-toppers, owing to Kohli’s excellent effort, which included three half-centuries to become the tournament’s leading run-scorer.

Suryakumar Yadav, a T20 sensation, has also collected runs and, with a tournament strike rate of 193.96, will be India’s major weapon in their quest for their first world championship since the 2013 Champions Trophy.

India, who won the 2007 T20 World Cup, appears to be a threat.
